About the Author
The author of these aphorisms is Ibn ‘Aṭā’ Allāh the Alexandrian. He was born in 658 AH/1259 CE and died in 709 AH/1310 CE, which makes him, at the time of this writing, a most peculiar figure in Islamic history who lived in its exact middle. He represents the very best of the classical Sunni tradition. While he was known early in his scholarly career as a jurist of the Mālikī school of law, his legacy would be elsewhere. It was his encounter with the spiritual master and saint, Abū ’l -‘Abbās al-Mursī (d. 686 AH/1287 CE), himself a disciple of the famous saint and eponym of one of Islam’s greatest spiritual orders, Abū ’l-Ḥasan ash-Shādhilī (d. 656 AH/1258CE), that altered Ibn ‘Aṭā Allah’s life forever. Being initiated into the Sufi way by al-Mursī, our author began the journey within to emerge after a short while a master himself. Ibn ‘Aṭā Allah’s experience and spiritual insights became his forte and an indistinguishable aspect of his character and intellectual output. All his extant writings are works of Sufism and of these writings, his name is forever synonymous with the aphorisms contained within the covers of this present volume.
